FAQ - Yak Digital Home Phone

Questions regarding Yak Digital Home Phone.

General FAQ

What do I need to use Yak Digital Phone?
You will need a high speed Internet connection via DSL or Cable, plus one of the following:
  • An analogue phone adapter (ATA). Yak supports the Linksys SPA2102 ATA.
  • A softphone. Yak recommends the free X-Lite 4.0 softphone from Counterpath.
What is a Phone Adapter (ATA)?
An ATA phone adapter is a small device that is used to connect one or more standard analogue telephones to a digital telephone system such as Yak Digital Phone. With Yak Digital Phone service the device is a Linksys SPA2102 adaptor. This device comes with a power adapter, one Ethernet port, one Internet port, and two telephone ports. In the recommended configuration the SPA2102 plugs into your high speed modem and the network cable from your PC plugs into the Ethernet port. Your regular analogue telephone set plugs into one of the phone ports which allow you to make phone calls over the Internet.
What is an IP Phone?
An IP Phone is a special type of phone whose calls traverse the internet rather than the public telephone network. IP phones connect directly to your home network and thus must physically be located where network wiring exists. A variety of IP Phones are available with the SNOM 300 being the phone supported by Yak. IP phones are more expensive than ATA phone adapter devices therefore most users prefer to obtain an ATA as it allows them to continue using their existing analogue phones.
What is a Softphone?
A Softphone is a software application for making telephone calls over the Internet using a computer. A softphone has the functions of a traditional phone such as a dial pad as well as many advanced features such as contact lists, call history, and messaging options. You will require a headset or a microphone with speakers in order to use a softphone. Yak Digital Phone recommends the use of the free X-Lite 4.0 softphone from Counterpath. X-Lite is a non-commercial freeware software application provided by CounterPath Corporation.
What is VoIP phone service and how is it different from a landline?
VoIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, is the technology that turns your analogue voice into digital data and sends it over the Internet instead of over traditional phone lines. With Yak Digital Phone you can make calls over your existing high speed internet connection while using your current analogue phone set. In addition you have an option of using the phone service from any location with an internet connection while using for example a softphone.
Does VoIP work the same way as a traditional landline phone service?
Yes. The main difference is that your phone calls are sent over the Internet instead of over traditional landlines. Other than that, the service is similar – you will just get more features at a great low cost! The sound quality should be the same as before and the basic functioning of the phone will be the same as it always has: you can call anyone and anyone can call you. Plus, in most cases, you can keep your phone number
Do I have to get High Speed Internet from Yak?
No. However, Yak offers great bundle rebates and loyalty points.
Will VoIP work with my home alarm system?
At this time, the service won’t work with home alarm systems.
What happens if my Internet service goes out?
You need Internet service to make a VoIP call. If you do not have Internet service, as in a power outage or if your Internet is not working, you will not be able to use your VoIP service.
Can I transfer my current phone number to Yak Digital Phone?
Yes. We recommend that you first set up your Yak Digital Phone service with the phone number we give you. When you have made a few calls and are satisfied with the service, you simply complete a Number Transfer form. Please allow 20 business days from when you submit the form to have your number transferred.
If I cancel my landline phone service will I still have my DSL service?

A DSL service runs over a landline phone line or a Dry Loop (a phone line without a dial tone). If you cancel your phone line, your provider will require that you purchase a Dry Loop service so that you continue receiving DSL service. You will incur a monthly charge and possibly an installation charge.

If you are a Yak High Speed Internet customer or would like to become one, please visit the Yak High Speed Internet web page and look under Great Rates for our service charges and Dry Loop cost.

Can I choose a number from any city?
You can choose a city from our availability list and a number for that city will be provided to you. We will have phone numbers for the major cities in Canada. Please inquire with customer service when you sign up.
Can I use Yak with third party devices or softphones?
Yes, but Yak Digital Phone does not provide technical support for the use of devices other than the Linksys SPA2102 ATA, the SNOM 300 IP phone and the X-Lite 4.0 softphone. However you are free to use an unsupported device or softphone if you are willing to configure it yourself knowing that Yak will not provide technical support other than giving you our configuration details.
Will I be able to dial 911 for emergency service?
Yes. However, please note:
  • 9-1-1 emergency calling using the Yak Digital Phone service provides a more limited form of 9-1-1 emergency calling than that available using traditional wireline 9-1-1 emergency calling. Be prepared to provide your location and call back number to the operator who answers the 9-1-1 call since the operator may not have this information. The Yak Digital Phone Service will not automatically provide such operator with your correct address and telephone number.
  • When making a 9-1-1 emergency call, do not hang up until requested to do so, and if you are prematurely disconnected you must call back.
  • Provide address and telephone number information on or immediately next to all telephone sets attached to the Yak Digital Phone Service. This way, all potential users of the Yak Digital Phone service can properly provide the operator with the appropriate information in an emergency.
  • 9-1-1 emergency calls will not be available during a power outage and will not be available during an Internet service outage.
  • 9-1-1 emergency calls made from locations outside of Canada cannot be completed by the operator. When Using the Yak Digital Phone outside of Canada, you must use an alternate wireline service to dial 9-1-1.
  • Be sure you fully understand the limitations of 9-1-1 emergency calling using the Yak Digital Phone service and make sure all other potential users of the service are also aware of these limitations.
  • Be sure to apply your supplied 911 sticker to your Yak Digital Phone handset and follow the instructions in an emergency:
How can I use Yak Digital Phone on multiple analogue phones?
One way to use Yak Digital Phone on multiple phones is to use a cordless phone with multiple handsets. You can plug the base station into the ATA and all your handsets will ring.
Can I make/receive a call with my softphone and with my Analogue Phone connected to my ATA at the same time?
No. Concurrent calls are not allowed, however you can be logged in with one or more devices at the same time.
Are there any installation or activation charges with Yak Digital Phone?
There are no installation or activation charges.
Is there a charge for directory assistance (411)?
Yes, there is a charge of 80¢ for long distance directory assistance.

Are there any taxes or other government fees that I should know about?
July 1, 2010 in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia the PST and GST will be combined to create the HST [Harmonized Sales Tax]. The HST is applicable on Yak services. HST will appear on your monthly invoice beginning June 15, 2010. Learn more about the HST through the Canada Revenue Agency. Do you send a bill before you charge my credit card or process an EFT payment?
Yes, you'll always receive your invoice approximately 10 business days before any payments are processed.
What is Call Trace?
Call Trace ensures that the number of your last incoming caller is recorded so that appropriate action may be taken against the harassing party.
Note: There is a $5 fee for this service and should only be used in serious situations. Trace information will only be released to the police; it will not be provided to you. You must contact the police if you wish to take action on a traced call. May not be available in certain areas.
How to use Call Trace?
  • Hang up after receiving the threatening or harassing call.
  • Lift the receiver and dial *57 (or 1157 on rotary phones).
  • Wait for a confirmation dial tone or a recording telling you that call trace has been placed and hang up.

Update Your Service Address

9-1-1 emergency calling using Yak Digital Home Phone Service provides a more limited form of 9-1-1 emergency calling than that available using traditional wireline 9-1-1 emergency calling. Unlike traditional wireline 9-1-1 emergency calling, Yak Digital Home Phone Service will not automatically provide such Operator with your address and telephone number. You must orally provide the Operator with your current address and telephone number. In addition, we strongly advise that with any change of address and/or telephone number you update your Yak account. This information may be accessed by an Operator and the PSAP [Public Service Answering Point] if you unable to communicate your address and telephone orally. Learn more here.
